Dancing With Reality: Idealism, Grief & Learning to Yoga With Life

Share:

“Living in the fantasy or the realism means living anywhere but now—pouring into cups that are no longer there.”

This episode cracked something open for me. While watching Dirty Dancing, I was hit with a realization about my mom, about grief, and about the idealism I inherited from her. She wanted that epic love story, that moment where everything comes together and makes sense. For a long time, she held on to the dream more tightly than she held on to what was actually happening around her. And as I sat there remembering her and the way she shaped my life, I felt the truth of how easy it is to slip into fantasy as a way to make life feel gentler.

Grief has a way of humbling us and pulling us right into the present moment. It asks us to stop pretending that life is supposed to look a certain way. It asks us to breathe with what is actually here. In the episode, I talk about how my mom’s idealism became both her comfort and her struggle, and how I have done the same. We either cling to the future through fantasy, or we cling to the past through painful realism, and both rob us of the power we have right now.

In this conversation I explore
• How idealism can comfort us and drain us at the same time
• How grief reshapes identity and the stories we tell about ourselves
• Why living in the past or the future disconnects us from the moment that actually matters
• What it means to walk with the current instead of fighting it
• How yoga and Ayurveda help us meet life with honesty, steadiness, and compassion
